It is knitting up so quick that I am wanting to crank it out. Not good when there is a book to read by Tuesday.

Today my mom and I blocked the Myrtle Leaf Shawl. We used her blocking wires. I love them! No need for a million pins. We also made Apple Kuken–a request by Gracie. Yum!

Back to school for all the kids…and me. Yes, I said me but more about that later. Gracie started high school and seems to like it. Of course, all of the teachers are “weird”. Highlights include gym 8th period, Honors English 9th and the swim team. Owen started back at his school. He had a rough summer with nearly 3 weeks off but had a good first day and not so good second day. Cameron began 5th grade and has his two best buds in his class! And Gracie’s old teacher who adored her.

Summer events included the Police concert at Jones Beach, visit from UK friends, a loong drive to Hilton Head where it rained a lot and a fab BBQ at Chez Swine. And I decided to go back to graduate school.

Today I enrolled as a non-matriculated student at the Palmer School of Library Science. I was planning to take the Intro class but was swayed to take an elective in Serving Diverse Populations. It’s an exciting opportunity to bring some of my life experience having a child with autism to the career I hope to have. I am both excited and scared. Knit on.

The teacher has not been in since day one with no concrete return date. Behaviors are up at school and home…which is to be expected. But the aggression toward me hasn’t been seen in quite some time.

I knit the Araucania Ulmo scarf for Cameron’s teachers. I knit four but only managed to photograph one. Gracie’s chorus teacher has a scarf blocking on the bed…I guess I have to move that before I go to sleep. And my mom gave me a Wollemeise gift today. Must remember to take pictures.

G is for guitar and H is for Henry Hudson May 16, 2008

Owen_and_the_disappearing_needles_0 Gracie is much too busy being a teenager to send me her preferred picture for blog fodder!  So onto a bit more enthusiastic participant!  Cameron, my guitar loving rocker.  Cameron started playing the bass guitar in the fall and bought an electric guitar by himself for his 10th birthday.  He is doing really well with it and truly enjoying it.  He rocks out on Rush, The Police, Santana, and Deep Purple.  Mind you–I have very little clue as to what these songs are but I am learning…Black Magic Woman, Smoke on the Water.  It is a lot of fun!

Henry_hudson H is for Henry Hudson.  Cameron did a book report on Henry Hudson and the 4th grade did a Living History Museum.  Cameron was incredible.  Despite his short term memory issues–he was fantastic.  He stayed in character the whole time and looked fabulous!  His teacher’s daughter, who is in Gracie’s grade, said Cameron was the best!

There was another post saved for this that included details about Gracie anOwen_and_the_disappearing_needles_2d why I am not knitting or reading but my knitting mojo has returned.  I am knitting the  Chevron Lace baby blanket from Vogue Knitting on the Go in Koigu from the stash.  Oh how I love to use stash.  The color is just so gorgeous that it will be put in the hope chest for some future grandchild.  We took Cameron and their friends to go see My Chemical Romance at the Garden last Friday.  That was fun.  My favorite song is Teenagers.

Owen_and_the_disappearing_needles_3 In sad news, Owen has disposed of all of my straight knitting needles, several pieces of jewelry, money, beads and goodness knows what else.  Kevin took him to the dentist on Friday and forgot to make sure our bedroom door was locked while on the phone.  I thought Owen was dumping my stuff down a small hole around the air conditioning duct but after having several holes put in the walls, floors and step–all that was found was 6 cents.  I am especially sad as some of the needles were my Owen_and_the_disappearing_needles_4 grandmothers…Lantern Moon needles…and antique needles  from France.  The hole has since been closed up and boxed in but there are other random spots in Owen_and_the_disappearing_needles_5 the house…who knows what lies beneath.

Cam_and_soar_pageant_015 In the meantime, direct your eyes to poor Cameron whose face slid across the ground…although he prefers to tell people he was mauled by a bear.  Thank goodness it is healing nicely but that scab is going to itch!Cam_and_soar_pageant_014

I guess it has been a while and there is a post saved in draft waiting on a teenager to send me a picture she can live with.  Although a Central Park Hoodie picture would have killed two birds with one stone.  Poor birds.  I have finished my sheep sweater.  Granny and I are planning to wear them to the NENA show.

Return to reality March 12, 2008

Dsc02596All in all a very relaxing trip.  We canceled more things than we actually did.  Golf was canceled twice, tennis skipped–even a spa treatment was canceled.  Pool, beach, pool.  On the excursion day we kayaked and snorkeled.  I made it to the gym 4 times and swam laps.  The food was pretty good too.  I think I only put on 4lbs and the chocolate brownie with ice cream was worth it!  Highlights were Miss June’s and Montpelier Inn.  The biggest highlightDsc02644
was spending time with Kevin.  The kids did well with Grandma…in fact Owen has requested, "I want Grandma" twice now.  Grandma has now informed us that she is ready to do it for the next 5 years!  Kevin better get cracking at work!

I worked on a baby blanket for Kevin’s coworker who is giving birth to a girl to be named, Caty.  I was basing it on 100 Afghan Squares to Knit but I am not feeling it.  Back to the drawing board.

I guess it has been a while.  I haven’t felt much like knitting.  I don’t know if that afghan killed my mojo.  I had a terrific get together with Christy and Jody–our yearly.  I haven’t quite figured out GPS and took the no toll road route.   A bit longer and more scenic drive though.  I received Owen’s augmentative communication device before the holiday and it was the wrong one.  The device given to me weighed over 7lbs and was meant for someone in a wheel chair.  His coordinator was going to give it a try with Owen but they called the district yesterday and told them it was impossible.  It’s a gorgeous machine–like a laptop…so I returned it to the district today and have my fingers crossed that they can swap it out for the correct device.

I have a stomach ache and Gracie drank all of the ginger ale.  The kids enjoyed Christmas.  Owen was delighted with his new iPod.  He’s got a couple of Disney movies on there and his music as well as a few TV shows.  Nancy suggested that and it has been a real lifesaver for going out to dinner!  Everyone is enjoying Rock Band!

Christmas_pic_07_114 My mom gave Gracie a pair of mittens.  They really are lovely.  However, Gracie said (after my mother left) they felt like oven mitts

Has it been over a week? December 10, 2007

Really?  Why is time flying so quickly?  And why aren’t my needles keeping up?  I was uncertain what to do with the afghan/throw for my friend and asked in an email should I enlarge it by another 2 strips or just knit 2 throws as they sit on separate couches.  He said the smaller one would have been fine but since I have knit on just go with the 5×4 throw.  That works out to approximately 65×52".  I have opted against the crochet fringe as the shorter (would have been fringed side) is only 3 rows of garter.  Argh.  Why do I complicate things so?

Gracie wants the Central Park Hoody.  I took her on a stash tour but she was in the market for white.  WhSoar_thanksgiving_pagaent_011ite?  Is she nuts?  She reluctantly agreed to an off white/cream but I could seen the unhappiness in her face and asked her to just tell me her preferred color!  A worn sweater in new yarn is better than an unworn sweater knit from the stash!  Gray.  I have talked Grandma into knitting a back.  Thanks mom.  Another team effort.  Hurray.  I want to start Kevin’s sweater in the  Jo Sharp Silkroad Aran tweed.  I don’t believe the Salt Lake City Dale is getting finished very soon.

Cameron survived his oral surgery.  Thanks for all of the well wishes.  His recovery was speedy as he wanted to go up to CT with us for the weekend.  We had a wedding and he wanted to stay with his cousin.  He was a real trooper!  And I can’t be photograped for anything…cheesy wedding shot with new do, fancy dress, and loads of make up by my sister.

This is very annoying.  This is centered while I am composing  it and not after I am finished.

Knitting on November 8, 2007

Throw_for_brian_and_joel_009_2 The throw is coming along.  With my knitting friends over today, showing it off, I found a mistake in the second panel, first square.  I am now in the 3rd square.  It isn’t awful and I can live with it.  The yarn is a bit hairier than I expected given there is no mohair but it blocked and bloomed very nicely.

Knitting was fun today.  My mom, Ann, Granny and Peg came over.  Granny kindly made Uncle Buzzy’s broccoli cheese soup and my mom made Tapioca.  I made the coffee and tea.  I think it was a good deal for me.  As always there were plenty of laughs.

Tomte My tomte came yesterday.  I have been waiting for him since January.  I absolutely love him.  Owen wanted him in his bed.  Cameron, Kevin and Gracie thought I made it myself.  He makes me smile!  Isn’t he adorable?

Kevin is out of town and I suppose I ought to pick up Cameron.

Thank you Patty! November 1, 2007

Halloween_and_stuff2007_088 I want to thank Patty, my Knit One Tea Too swap angel, for the lovely package she (and Mary) put together!  There are some new teas to taste, yummy scones to make–with jam, of course.  I absolutely love the potholders.  Maybe it is a coincidence, maybe it is fate…but Patty was my swap partner and the one potholder is crocheted in the Katia Jamaica I sent her.  Mary made that fabulous tea cozy.  Honestly, I was blown away by Patty’s generosity.  And I can’t wait to knit up that sushi wallet she sent.  Perfect colors too.  Thank you, thank you, thank you Patty and Mary.

And to the chick that flaked out–you should be ashamed of yourself.  I just don’t understand why people join these things if they aren’t going to follow through?  I would be mortified to receive something and not have sent something in return–the person should send what they received–at the very least–to the person they are flaking out on if they can’t do it themselves.

Halloween

Halloween_and_stuff2007_103 I have to say I am a bit disappointed in my kids this year.   They were done by 6:30pm.  Cameron and Gracie went to one of her friends house and trick or treated in their neighborhood.  I assumed we could all go with Owen when they got home.  "My feet hurt" and "I’m tired" was all we got.  Owen went out on his own with Kevin and tried to go into everyone’s house.  Thank goodness he was a cat so we could pull him back with his tail.  Owen even requested the bathroom at one house.  We know them so they said yes before we could say no and his costume was off and he was gone.  Never dull.  But when we were kids we were like candy machines–out as late as we could…dropping off and going back for more.
